With all the theories of healthy eating, knowing the best way to eat can be confusing. Diets come and go, and with them, usually so does the weight. It is important to maintain a varied, balanced diet and keep in mind moderation and healthy foods. One way to eat healthy is to remember the rainbow of foods. Eating foods of the colors of the rainbow will ensure a varied, nutrient and vitamin rich intake. Make sure the foods are naturally colored, though.
One of the most important colored foods to eat are red foods. Red food contains high amounts of antioxidants, which are fight certain cancers and heart disease. Antioxidants also soak up free radicals which can be damaging to the body, as well as help prevent heart disease and stroke.
Many red fruits and vegetables also contain quercetin, a specific antioxidant, which some believe keeps a healthy immune system and fights against allergies in a natural way. Another antioxidant, lycopene, is important to good health as it helps manage cholesterol and keep the body’s defensive mechanisms working.
Finding red foods is quite easy; the fruit and vegetable world is full of them. The old expression, “an apple a day…” still stands true, as red apples are rich in antioxidants, as well as good for the body fiber. Some of the best red foods to eats are the berries, like strawberries and raspberries. They are little powerhouses of packed vitamins and antioxidants. Cherries are high on the healthy foods charts and contain some powerful pain relief to help headaches or other pains. Pomegranates, watermelon, red pears and red grapes are also worth adding to the diet.
As far as vegetables go, beets, red peppers and tomatoes are the stars of the red food family. They are loaded with antioxidants and lycopene, as well as a plethora of vitamins. Remember, forms of these foods are good to, like tomato sauce and soups.
Though some of the vegetables work well cooked and turned into soups and sauces, stay away from the sugar filled forms of these red fruits and veggies. Adding these red super stars will certainly lead to a healthy way of eating.
